From March 1987 to June 1991, 33 patients with end stage renal disease were treated by continuous peritoneal dialysis. The peritoneal access was achieved by insertion of a double-cuff Tenckhoff catheter.
@ES The following results were obtained.
@EN 1) The sex distribution was 18 males to 15 females.
2) They received dialysis for 1 to 36 months(average 13 months).
3) The mean peritonitis rate was 1.53 frequency patient-year, the most common causative organism was staphylococcus epidermidis.
4) The other complication except peritonitis were catheter obstruction 3 cases, catheter exit infection 1 case, catheter tunnel infection 1 case, and leakage around catheter 1 case.
5) The cause of catheter removal were intractable peritonitis, death catheter obstruction, catheter tunnel infection, in order.
6) The common cause of death were infection, hepatic failure, cardiovascular disease, in order.
7) The catheter survival rates at one and two years were 70% and 52% respectively.
In conclusion prevention of peitonitis in the key to better catheter survival.
